World record sprinter, Usain Bolt owns a piece of the Berlin wall

The Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt broke world records in winning gold medals in the 100 and 200 meters at the world championships in Berlin this year. Bolt set a world record in the 100 at 9.58 seconds and 19.19 in the 200.

As a recognition of his value, Bolt received from the Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit a strange gift: an original segment of the Berlin Wall which weights almost three tons and has 12-foot high.

The piece makes part from the wall which has separated communist East Berlin from West Berlin between 1961 and 1989. The rock is decorated with a painting of Bolt running on the blue track of the Olympic stadium and the words “NEW WR” (new world record).

“I will never forget Berlin. Ich bin ein Berlino”, the sprinter said yesterday at the final ceremony.

In the end, Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit said something very nice concerning Bold and making, in the same time, a connection to the strange gift he received: “One can tear down walls that had been considered as insurmountable.”
