Before the term world music was a twinkling in anyone’s eye, 3 Mustaphas 3 were doing it, mixing up different cultures into a gleeful grab bag of music and leaving a heritage that has influenced musicians all over the world

One of the mainstays of the Higher Octave label, 3rd Force is an instrumental trio composed of multi-instrumentalists William Aura (also the group’s producer and chief composer), Craig Dobbin, and Alain Eskinasi, plus varied and frequent guest musicians

The new age duo 2002 consists of Texas-based multi-instrumentalists/vocalists Pamela and Randy Copus Both husband and wife had an early interest in music: Pamela started piano lessons at age six and went on to study keyboards, flute, piccolo, oboe, guitar, violin, and the bagpipes, while Randy studied voice, guitar, piano, keyboards, trumpet, tuba, and guitar before learning about recording and production

Based in Berlin, Germany, the 17 Hippies started off in 1995 as a trio playing the otherwise unlikely mix of Cajun and Baroque music Gradually, they expanded their line-up and eventually ended up as an orchestra consisting of twenty, sometimes even thirty musicians

The San Francisco-based trio 2 Foot Yard is known for its daring and pioneering way with classical sounds: when violinist/vocalist Carla Kihlstedt, percussionist/guitarist Shahzad Ismaily, and cellist/vocalist Marika Hughes are not fusing them with visceral, pounding rock or energetic pop, they’re exploring compositional boundaries by hitching e e cummings poems or other unorthodox works to their brief avant-garde pieces

Michigan-based worldbeat band 47UMa are led by singer/guitarist Gail Baker, who began performing professionally in the Detroit area in 1980, working with a variety of groups
