Bassist and songwriter Albert Brown has been a force in a variety of black music styles since the first half of the ’90s. While he grew into his identification with the gangsta rap scene like someone might try on a zoot suit in a thrift store, his involvement in the debut album by Usher in 1994 resulted in a string of love songs, sappy enough to make an old fashioned gangster want to squash a grapefruit in his face. In defense of Brown it can be noted that titles such as “I’ll Show You Love” and “Love Was Here” all involved co-writers, so perhaps all he did was come up with a bass line. As far as the latter are concerned, Brown seems to have the goods to please producer Mike B., with whom he has worked on several recording projects. The bassist is often in the company of guitarists Cory Stoot and Gary Shider, an instrumental combination that backed up the enigmatic 380 Dat Lady, among others. This Albert Brown should not be confused with the engineer of the same name, nor the vintage jazzman known as Pud Brown.
