William Russell Biography

William Russell Photo

Before his entrance into Magdalen Hall at Oxford for his Bachelors degree, Russell had already been the student of Cope, Shrubsole, Groombridge, Hackney and Arnold. Russell had also been employed as the organist at St. Anne’s Limehouse and the pianist and composer for Sadler’s Wells Theatre. His composition of over twenty pantomimes can attest to a theatrical interest. Russell also composed sacred works and voluntaries for the organ. Not known primarily as a composer Russell was highly respected for his performing abilities and organ expertise. His father had been a builder of organs and Russell was often summoned to inspect the instruments. He wrote at least one oratorio, “Job” that was performed at a benefit concert for his wife after Russell died.
