Alexandru Flechtenmacher Biography

Romanian music came in to its own through the instigation of Flechtenmacher. He studied with violinists of the French vaudeville of Iasi, and later with Boehm and Mayseder in Vienna. Accordingly, these influences upon his music could have developed into a parrot of French comedy or Germanic pathos, but, Flechtenmacher proceded to other areas in concert: first to Odessa, then to the German opera orchestra in Iasi, and finally Romania. “Baba Hirca” was the first truly Romanian opera and in combination with Flechtenmacher’s patriotic songs, marches and choruses, this earned him the right to found the Philharmonic Society of Craiova and the Bucharest Conservatory where he served as Professor of the Violin.
