A composition student of Halevy and Leborne at the Paris Conservatoire, Maillart also studied violin with Guerin. His first place finish in the “Prix de Rome” was for a cantata “Lionel Foscari.” Operas composed by Maillart included “Gastibelza ou Le fou de Tolede,” “Le moulin de tilleuls,” “La croix de Marie,” “Les dragons de Villars,” (his most successful work) and “Les pecheurs de Catane.” Two other cantatas included “La voie sacree,” and “Le quinze aout.”
